Lichens are organisms that arise through a symbiotic relationship between a species of fungus and a species of photosynthetic bacterium or alga. Lichen are composite organisms and although they sometimes appear plant-like, they are not plants. Although lichens are sometimes mistakenly thought to be a fungal disease, they are actually the combination of two different organisms. Branch and twig samples showing lichen (pronounced liken) growth often arrive at the Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic to be diagnosed for disease.
